Competition News

On Saturday 28th February, 30 students and 50 spectators from Truro, Newquay, Redruth and Camborne attended a martial arts competition at Cornwall College.

This was the first competition held in Cornwall for the British Tang Soo Do Federation.  Students entered three different categories which included self defence combinations, patterns of movement and free sparring.  These categories were also split into Dragons (children), and Adults groups.  Quality of technique was demonstrated during the patterns of movement, and the fast paced, dynamic side of the art was certainly seen by the spectators during the sparring event.

For many students, this was their first opportunity to enter a competition.  They are now looking forward to going away to compete in larger events in the UK.

Mr Woodmason, the Regional Instructor, who is also a local Primary School PE Teacher, said that this is a great confidence booster for children.  Touch contact is a safer way for students to compete against others.  Students must demonstrate the dynamic skills while showing control and discipline.  The children showed great courage to step up and spar.  It’s also a great experience for adults, and gives them the opportunity to practice their skills in a different environment.

On the day, the group were also helping to support the new national Change 4 Life program that promotes healthy lifestyles for families. In order to maintain a healthy weight we need to both eat better and move more. Students were certainly moving well on the day! Many families are making changes that will help them live healthier and longer lives.

Not only did everyone have a great afternoon but we also raised £50 for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.  An excellent day!
